The concern form acts as a way for students to understand why an author wrote an article and how that author used writing to affect the reader. Works well for English, but may also work for other classes, as well.

Concern Form
Purpose
-Determining main idea and author's purpose
-Identifying supporting details
-Understanding tone and audience
Passage Title:

Concern
(Why did the author write this? What is his/her concern? What prompted the writer to write this?)
Audience - specific audience (who is the ideal reader -- one person?)
(Who is the author addressing? Who is the intended audience?)
Audience - general audience (what group(s) does the author want to know about this?)
(Who is the author addressing? Who is the intended audience?)
Purpose -- Highlight all that apply
(What is the author trying to accomplish? What methods does he/she use?)
to persuade
to explain a cause-effect
to analyze
to compare & contrast
to divide into parts
to classify into categories
to define
to illustrate (give examples or paint a picture)
Tone
(How does the author feel about the topic? How do you know?)
Main Idea
(What is the overall idea that the author is trying to convey?)
